Stay Healthy While Having Fun at the Jersey Shore This Fall

Fun at the Jersey Shore - On the Beach

It’s no secret that staying healthy has been on everyone’s mind this year. For much of the spring and summer, it’s been challenging to do some of the things you like to do. With fall’s arrival, we’ve got a few ideas on how to stay healthy while having fun at the Jersey Shore.

Walking

Walking on flat surfaces (like the Long Branch boardwalk!) can burn 240 calories per hour if you weigh around 150 pounds and walk at approximately 2 miles per hour, according to the American Heart Association.

Fun at the Jersey Shore - Walking

Add some sand, however, and you can expect to burn 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy than walking on a solid, flat surface—even if you’re walking at the same speed! Therefore, walking on the beach can burn more calories while covering the same distance, making your exercise more effective. Not to mention the incomparable feeling of well-being you get when taking in all that salt air! While the temperatures are still mild, we recommend a barefoot stroll along the ocean’s edge…but maybe that’s just us. You do you. ?

Biking

Biking

Now that summer’s officially at an end, you can bike the Long Branch Boardwalk, but there is also a dedicated bike path alongside the boardwalk. Take advantage of fall’s comfortable temperatures and get out there and ride!

Surfing

It may not be Big Sur, but the Jersey Shore provides some decent surfing opportunities—and fall is prime surfing time at the Jersey Shore. The crowds have thinned, the water is still warm, and hurricane season means great swells and waves. Just be careful out there!

Beach Yoga

Easy does it…stretch…reach…hold. Yoga is so relaxing, and so good for you! But beach yoga? Yeah, that’s something really extraordinary. You must try it! But get here soon: Morning Beach Yoga has only been extended through October 4.

Canoeing, Kayaking, and Paddleboarding

Fun at the Jersey Shore - SUP

Whether you’re an old pro or just ready to explore another way to enjoy the water, canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are a great way to get another perspective on the beauty of the Jersey Shore. Rent canoes, kayaks, and standup paddleboards (SUPs) here and here.

But if exercise isn’t your idea of fun at the Jersey Shore, you’ll find that there’s plenty else to do. Although there may be some limits on indoor dining and other gatherings, Long Branch and surrounding towns still have a lot to offer, and every venue is taking the recommended precautions to keep you and your family safe while providing lots of fun activities.

Fun at the Jersey Shore - Fishing

If canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding aren’t your thing, a boat tour or fishing charter is another great way to get out on the water and enjoy the fall weather.

Indoor dining has resumed in New Jersey, and most of Long Branch’s restaurants are open for business, including these on the waterfront.

Shopping is always on the agenda here, and Pier Village offers some of the best.

The fact is, Jersey Shore towns are exhibiting amazing adaptability during challenging times.

In fact, Red Bank’s “Broadwalk” pedestrian plaza has been extended into November.

The Market at Whitechapel Projects at 15 2nd Avenue in Long Branch will be open on Saturdays through October 16. A Farmers, Growers, & Makers Market hosted by Whitechapel Projects, Asbury Park Bazaar, and Long Branch Bazaar, The Market features the best in New Jersey fresh produce, as well as Jersey-made food, handcrafted goods, and vintage.

Brewery

The Whitechapel Project Brewery aims to be a major socializing location because of its beer garden atmosphere. One of the latest breweries to open its doors in the Jersey Shore area, Whitechapel Project Brewery is more than just a brewery, featuring sprawling indoor and outdoor areas fit for just about any occasion. Think one part brewery offering a variety of nano-brews on tap, one part eatery offering delicious bites that pair nicely with its drinks.

The Bradley Ramble is an afternoon of live music in Bradley Beach, just eight miles downbeach from Long Branch. This event happens on Sunday, October 11.

The Ramble is followed by the Bradley Beach Fall Festival on Sunday, October 18.

And, finally, there’s the Fall Fun Fest at Maple Leaf Farms in Manalapan! This family-friendly event is just 40 minutes west of Long Branch. Open weekends (plus Columbus Day) between September 19-October 25, the Fun Fest offers:

• Hayrides
• A train for kids to ride
• Charlotte’s Spiderweb
• Huge corn maze
• Animal barnyard
• Pig races, goat races
• Tire mountain
• Hay maze
• Sandlot play area
• Jumping pony pen
• Pumpkin bowling
• Pumpkin picking
• Live country music and a live rodeo show at 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday

There’s no question that there’s still a lot of fun at the Jersey shore. In fact, it’s hard to think of a reason to stay away, even (maybe especially!) during Fall 2020!
